Infant and Primary School in Cartama

Cártama · 2025 · ARQUITECTURA

Taking advantage of the natural unevenness of the plot, which offers us three theoretical levels on the ground floor, we optimise uses and circulations, also ensuring that many of the spaces in the building can operate at different or complementary times to that of the school itself.

We have arranged the building to reorganize the spaces easily, thanks to an intermediate distribution between the herringbone scheme and the model around courtyards, with a logical and simple structure that articulates the server and served spaces. This configuration will allow future expansions, changes of use or adjustments in the number and size of classrooms without resorting to complex interventions.

Three clearly differentiated functional levels are generated. On the first level is the infant education area, with its own courtyard and outdoor areas. On a second level is the general access, along with all the common services of the building (administration, teachers' rooms, library, etc.). This level is connected to a third level, where the sports uses are located, by means of a staircase that articulates the complex.

Since there is not enough space for an assembly hall, the natural unevenness of the topography is used to create a covered outdoor scenic space. This area is conceived as the heart of the school, a multipurpose place for academic events, sports or performances.
